Message:

I get the following message when trying to recieve my mail via outlook
express: The connection to the server has failed. Account:
'mail.compuplus.net', Server: 'mail.compuplus.net', Protocol: POP3, Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

OR

Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Has something changed?

Response:

This is usually caused by a 'closed port', what we have been seeing is that if Norton Internet Security is running then it needs to either be shutdown or adjusted to open that port. The easiest is to just shutdown or disable Norton Internet Security.
Other possibilities would be
-the 'timeout' is set to low. Open Outlook Express, go to tools, options, connections tab, increase the timeout to approximately 5 or 10 minutes.
-'Hangup after...' may be marked. Open Outlook Express, go to tools, options, connections tab, remove the check mark from 'Hangup after sending and recieving'.

This error is commonly an IMAP connection problem -not all too relevant with our configurations.
However if this error message appears perform the following:

  • Open Outlook / Outlook Express
  • Go to Tools
  • Go to
  • If IMAP mail shows in All or Mail then remove it
  • If IMAP is not showing or problem still continues
    • Manually type in the destination email address instead of reply
    • If the email is sent out then the recipient has their reply address mistyped.

This error message is pretty common and, according to the message received, usually points to an email routing problem. Many times, this is be caused by the following:

  • An Internet personal firewall
    • Norton Internet Security
    • Watchgaurd
    • Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
    • etc ...

    • This refers to an email that has an incorrectly typed address for the recipient (e.g. 1234@compuplus, or 1234@compupplus.net, etc.)

Now here is a basic rundown of how to fix the problem.

  • Check that there is no firewall running
    • Hover your mouse over each icon shown in the bottom-right corner of your screen, next to the clock
    • If there are any firewalls running then:
      • Right-click on the icon and click on Close, Exit, Disable, etc
      • this does NOT include Norton Anti-Virus or other antivirus applications
    • If there are any messages in the Outbox then remove them or delete them
    • Check that your email address is entered correctly:
      • Click on TOOLS
      • Click on ACCOUNTS
      • Click on the MAIL tab
      • Click on PROPERTIES
      • Ensure that your email address is typed correctly (e.g. 1234@compuplus.net
